Problem
Many coffee companies make use of various ways to seal their coffee it is packaged in. Metal cans and laminated packaging materials are the main materials used for coffee packaging. Laminated films used in coffee packaging are often made up of different layers, each with a different purpose, and amongst those layers is a thin metal layer, which usually creates a barrier for the roast coffee molecules. These materials are perfect for shelf life, however, are nearly impossible to recycle and it is not necessarily possible to separate those layers again. This makes many coffee brands unsustainable and their packaging is not recyclable or reusable.
