VANS Sustainable Shoe Packaging
The Brief
The brief tasked students to come up with a multifunctional packaging solution for a brand that will serve a purpose beyond containing the brand product. The packaging must be environmentally friendly, enhance the user experience, and have a life extended beyond the original packaging function. Thus came about the Vans Sustainable Shoe Packaging, as a brand that cares about the environment and being sustainable, this concept fit the brand well and demonstrated Vans’ keenness to become a green brand that people can relate to.
The Problem
Landfills are heaping up with clothing, shoes, and single-use packaging. Recognizing the environmental impact of discarded materials due to the excess packaging and materials added in shoe packaging, while also seeing the impact of fast fashion on the environment, Vans will partner with FabBrick, a company that makes use of clothing to make bricks, furniture to start a campaign that seeks to make shoe boxes reusable, and biodegradable, beyond their initial function of transporting shoes.
The Solution
VANS will partner with the brand FabBRICK to come up with a solution that not only reuses every part of the shoe packaging, but will also give VANS shoes a life beyond it’s initial purpose when the shoes have lived their life.
VANS X FabBRICK will create a shoe box that will have multiple functions after its single use as a shoe box, where the box can be turned into a Wax Box Container for skateboard wax, a Wall-Mounted Hook for skateboards and the cross body bag provided in the packaging.
The shoe box will be made from recycled fabric from landfills and VANS shoes when users bring them in to a VANS store.
